Welcome back to This Week In Effect (TWIE) - your weekly update of the latest developments in the Effect community and ecosystem.

Technology

Effect v4 Beta updates

The v4 beta wrapped up May and opened June with a focused week on observability, Schema robustness, and HTTP credential handling — here are the most notable changes that landed in effect-smol.

Observability (OTLP): Added a layer to configure OTLP with standard environment variables, changed OTLP resource attribute precedence for better compatibility with OpenTelemetry collectors, and cleaned up OTLP config internals.
Schema improvements: Refactored Schema.Error and Schema.Defect for cleaner internals, memoized error and defect schemas by options to avoid redundant instantiation, fixed Schema.Defect JSON encoding for Error values whose message property is not a string, validated StructWithRest index signatures, and preserved Redacted options in schema representations. Also added a GUID schema filter and max UUID support, and fixed uppercase max UUID validation.
Workflow & RPC: Aligned Workflow.make with the Rpc style for API consistency across durable execution primitives.
HTTP: Fixed HttpApi bearer/HTTP credential decoding to correctly strip space delimiters, and exposed customFetch config for Scalar.
Redis: Fixed Redis script handling for the rate limiter.
CLI: Added -v as an alias for the --version flag.
Documentation: Refined JSDoc usage guidance, and clarified Schema.Class equality docs.

Effect v4 Beta updates

The v4 beta closed out May with a strong week across HTTP security, reactivity, Schema fixes, and continued documentation quality improvements — here are the most notable changes that landed in effect-smol.

HttpApi security: Added HttpApiSecurity.http for passing custom HTTP authentication schemes, and added custom HTTP security scheme generation in the OpenAPI output. This enables scenarios beyond the standard bearer/basic patterns.
Schema fixes & additions: Reintroduced .value on Schema.Array and Schema.NonEmptyArray for consistency with other collection wrappers (Chunk, HashSet, etc.), fixed catch* combinators erasing unhandled error types, fixed arbitrary constraints for exclusive BigInt, Date, and integer number bounds, and added a JSON Schema custom annotation passthrough option for advanced use cases.
Reactivity: Fixed AtomRef notify listener resubscribe, ensuring listeners correctly reattach after notification cycles.
CLI: Added default value support to integer and file Prompt types, making CLI prompts more ergonomic when a sensible default exists.
Entity & Workflow: Made EntityResource lazy by default for better performance, and fixed workflow durable shard group routing.
OpenAI: Handled missing output arrays in OpenAI responses, and improved WebSocket error status reporting.
Bug fixes & internals: Fixed RequestResolver per-request instance leak (pendingBatches), fixed logger string formatter quoting, stopped catch* combinators from erasing unhandled error types, and clarified that Data.$is(tag) only checks the _tag field. Also emitted minimal docs in generated barrels to reduce bundle overhead.
Documentation: Continued the JSDoc quality push with improvements across Effect core APIs, a new Schedule cookbook, and corrected misleading API docs.

Effect v4 Beta: February–May Recap

Effect v4 Beta launched February 18, 2026. Since then, the team has been shipping at a relentless pace inside the effect-smol repository.

If you’ve been following the weekly This Week In Effect summaries, you’ve seen each piece land individually. This post pulls it all together: what v4 set out to change, what has landed since launch, and where the beta has been moving over the past few months.

Effect v4 Beta is the most ambitious release we’ve made so far, with three major goals:

a rewritten runtime
smaller bundles
unified package system

The core fiber runtime was rewritten from scratch with lower memory overhead, faster execution, and simpler internals. Many core modules were also rebuilt with bundle size in mind; for example, a minimal program using Effect, Stream, and Schema dropped from roughly 70 kB in v3 to about 20 kB in v4.

Effect v4 Beta also introduced unified versioning across the ecosystem. Instead of coordinating separate versions across Effect, @effect/platform, @effect/sql, @effect/rpc, and other packages, the v4 ecosystem now ships together under one version number. Many previously separate packages have also been consolidated into the core effect package, while platform-specific or provider-specific integrations remain separate.

Another important piece of the Effect v4 Beta is unstable modules. New functionality can now ship under effect/unstable/*, making it easier to experiment with new APIs inside the main package without committing to long-term stability too early.

What has landed since launch

Schema

Schema has been one of the most heavily worked areas of the beta. The changes span ergonomics, architecture, correctness, and DX.

API consolidation and renaming. makeUnsafe was renamed back to make for consistency. ExtendableClass was merged into Class. Schema.Codec.ToAsserts was removed; Schema.asserts now works with a direct asserts(schema, input) call. SchemaParser.makeUnsafe became SchemaParser.make.
New constructors and utilities. Added Schema.makeOption / SchemaParser.makeOption for constructing schema values wrapped in Option. Added Schema.asClass to turn any schema into a class with static method support. Added Schema.annotateEncoded for annotating the encoded side of a schema. Added Schema.resolveAnnotationsKey. Added Schema.DurationFromString for parsing duration strings. Added Config.literals as a convenience constructor for Schema.Literals. Added several missing *FromString schemas: StringFromBase64, StringFromBase64Url, StringFromHex, StringFromUriComponent.
Context-aware defaults. Schema decoding defaults can now require services, enabling context-aware default values. Defaults can also fail with SchemaError. The mapping for schema defaults was switched to eager for more predictable behavior.
Class improvements. Class constructors now accept void when all fields are optional. A compile-time MissingSelfGeneric error has been added for Class APIs. ErrorClass/TaggedErrorClass toString now matches native Error output.
Schema property processing. Schema properties and elements can now be processed concurrently.
JSON Schema output. Same-type literal branches are collapsed into a single enum array. compactEnums now supports multi-value enum branches. Added a JSON Schema custom annotation passthrough option for advanced use cases.
Type ergonomics. Struct utility return types (e.g., pick) now preserve the simplified shape instead of exposing raw Pick<T, K>. ~rebuild.out was renamed to Rebuild. withDecodingDefaultTypeKey / withDecodingDefaultType were added. FilterOutput was expanded to support multiple failures and full Issues at paths. Reintroduced .value on Schema.Array and Schema.NonEmptyArray for consistency with other collection wrappers (Chunk, HashSet, etc.).
Bug fixes. Fixed catch* combinators erasing unhandled error types. Fixed arbitrary constraints for exclusive BigInt, Date, and integer number bounds.
Model.Generated renamed to Model.GeneratedByDb for clarity on which fields are generated by the database versus the application.

IndexedDB

The IndexedDb module was merged in early April, bringing first-class browser persistence to Effect applications.

The module has been expanded significantly since landing:

Streaming and offset support for IDB queries
Compound index improvements and encoded types for IDB queries
A .reverse() method on IDB selects
A rebuild API for IDB databases
An improved transaction API with customizable durability
.reactive on IndexedDB .first queries for reactivity
Defaults for reactivity keys
Model.Class usable directly as IndexedDB schemas
Cached base IDB query builders for better performance
Cause.NoSuchElementError used for IDB .first queries (aligning with the broader Effect error model)
Fixed IDB entries transaction
Fixed bulk writes in indexed DB transactions

HTTP & HttpApi

HttpApi improvements. Added a code generation module (HttpApi.gen). Reworked HttpApiClient so urlBuilder uses schemas and client-shaped APIs. Renamed the withResponse option to responseMode. Added disableCodecs option to HttpApiEndpoint constructors. Fixed security middleware cache reuse. Allowed middleware to accept error arrays and fixed the HttpApi.Any constraint. Made HttpApi schema errors defects unless explicitly transformed. Added support for common string literals in HttpApiSchema.status. Included middleware errors in AtomHttpApi queries and mutations. Fixed empty body decoding in HttpApiBuilder. Fixed HttpApiBuilder void responses incorrectly producing a non-empty body.
HttpApi security. Added HttpApiSecurity.http for passing custom HTTP authentication schemes, and added custom HTTP security scheme generation in the OpenAPI output. This enables authentication scenarios beyond the standard bearer/basic patterns.
HttpApiTest. A new HttpApiTest module was added for testing HttpApi handlers without a running server, with support for overriding group base URLs.
HTTP client and server. Added a static file server. Added expireCookie APIs for HTTP cookies. Added Headers.removeMany combinator. Improved HttpClient.withRateLimiter with automatic delay from retry-after headers. Added support for form-urlencoded in the OpenAPI generator’s HTTP client format.

OpenAI. Added support for custom model/request properties in openai-compat. Forwarded reasoning config. Fixed the OpenAI MCP tool integration. Restored OpenAI reasoning types. Updated the OpenAI schema strategy. Added OpenAI reasoning support. Widened OpenAIFile.expires_at and status_details to accept null. Made strict mode configurable for tool definitions. Handled missing output arrays in OpenAI responses. Improved WebSocket error status reporting.
Streaming. Fixed missing finish parts in LanguageModel streaming. Fixed tool output persistence in streamed chat history.
Other providers. Fixed OpenRouter client HTTP referer header name. Fixed in-memory/in_memory prompt cache enum values for Amazon Bedrock.

Workflow & Durable Execution

Key fixes and improvements during the beta:

Fixed workflow failures being squashed by suspension interrupts
Isolated workflow suspension in DurableDeferred.into
Fixed Latch.release
Fixed parent pointer forwarding when spawning a child with discard: true
The DurableQueue module was also ported from v3 to v4, bringing persistent queue semantics to the beta.

SQL

New packages. Added @effect/sql-pglite for PGlite-backed SQL, expanding the SQL adapters available for lightweight and in-browser use cases.
New APIs. Added Sql.unique for queries that must return exactly one row. Added KeyValueStore.layerSql. Added makeMsgPack for configurable msgpackr options. Added support for .mts and .mjs SQL migration files.
PostgreSQL. Added a dedicated PG connection for LISTEN. Switched to pg_notify instead of raw NOTIFY in PgClient. Cleaned up sql-pg constructors and layers. Guarded transaction acquire failures in PgClient.fromPool.
Other fixes. Returned resolvers directly from SqlModel.makeResolvers. Disabled SQL traces for EventLog and RunnerStorage. Fixed SQL findAll/findNonEmpty request input typing.

Platform & Runtime

New APIs. Added Effect.abortSignal for exposing the current fiber’s abort signal. Added Socket.make for low-level socket construction. Added the Effectable module for defining custom effect-like types. Added Effect.acquireDisposable for integrating with the TC39 Explicit Resource Management proposal (using keyword). Ported Effect.firstSuccessOf from v3. Added a Crypto service to @effect/platform, exposing a cross-platform cryptography API. Added Layer.suspend constructor.
Type inference fixes. Used NoInfer in Layer constructors to prevent type erasure. Fixed cache constructor inference by moving the lookup option. Fixed type inference for Effect.retry when the times option is provided. Fixed Stream.toQueue types. Made Unify.unify work with the Layer module.
Bug fixes. Fixed Effect.forkScoped Scope requirements. Fixed SIGINT listener not being removed until fiber exit. Fixed TestClock layer Scope requirement. Fixed TestClock nanoseconds flooring before BigInt conversion. Fixed formatJson circular reference handling. Fixed fiber lifetime metric start hook lifecycle. Fixed Schedule.fixed immediate catch-up for long-running iterations. Fixed RequestResolver per-request instance leak (pendingBatches). Fixed logger string formatter quoting. Fixed AtomRef notify listener resubscribe, ensuring listeners correctly reattach after notification cycles. Clarified that Data.$is(tag) only checks the _tag field. Emitted minimal docs in generated barrels to reduce bundle overhead.

Stream & Scheduling

New APIs. Added Stream.broadcastN for broadcasting to N downstream consumers. Added Schedule.tap for side-effecting on schedule steps. Added Stream.timeoutOrElse. Added Stream service accessors.
Bug fixes. Fixed Channel.decodeText to correctly handle UTF-8 chunk boundaries. Fixed Stream.groupedWithin partial batch flushing. Fixed Effect.repeat to use the effect return value when using options. Optimized binary array generation from streams to reduce unnecessary copying.

CLI

New APIs. Added Command.withHidden to hide subcommands from help output. Added a hidden flag primitive. Used a predicate for Argument.variadic validation. Made parent flag inheritance explicit via Command.withSharedFlags. Added default value support to integer and file Prompt types, making CLI prompts more ergonomic when a sensible default exists.
Bug fixes. Fixed unstable CLI boolean flags. Underlined active labels in CLI multi-select prompts. Fixed an issue with exported CLI completion types. Fixed --log-level=value from swallowing the next argument. Fixed global flag handling in mixed CLI contexts. Used Ansi.blackBright for Weak spans so --help is readable on dark terminals. Replaced all hyphens in shell completion command names.

Context (formerly `ServiceMap`)

One of the most impactful changes during the beta: ServiceMap was renamed back to Context, realigning with v3 naming conventions. References were re-exported from effect/References. ServiceMap.Key was made covariant.

EventLog identity now string-encodes to base64.

Sharding & Cluster

Added availableShardGroups to ShardingConfig to prevent advisory lock conflicts. Added Kubernetes support for nullable lastTransitionTime values. Cleaned up ShardId.

Developer Experience & Documentation

JSDoc and documentation. Standardized JSDoc example imports across the entire codebase. Normalized category tags. Added a standard-jsdoc ESLint rule that validates JSDoc links and is now enabled across the library. Vetted @since tags between v3 and v4. Improved example titles and generated indexes. Fixed Struct symbol links to preserve “Go to Definition” (F12) navigation in VSCode. Clarified filter annotation messages in Schema docs. Added a docs section on customizing schema error responses in HttpApi. Cleaned up AGENTS.md. Continued the JSDoc quality push with improvements across Effect core APIs, corrected misleading API docs, and added a new Schedule cookbook.
Removals. Removed Effect.Yieldable, continuing the v4 API surface cleanup. Removed Schema.Codec.ToAsserts. Removed a duplicated stringifyCircular utility. Removed rulesync and cleanup patterns. Renamed dtslint directories to typetest.
Migration tooling. Previous API names are being added to migration maps for smoother upgrading. Two migration guides are available: the v3 to v4 Migration Guide and the Schema v4 Migration Guide.

The Effect v4 Beta has been moving fast

Effect v4 is still in beta, so breaking changes may occur.

The launch set the foundation: a rewritten runtime, smaller bundles, unified versioning, a consolidated core package, and a path for experimental APIs.

Since then, the work has been about carrying that foundation across the ecosystem: porting modules, refining APIs, smoothing migrations, improving docs, and tightening the developer experience.

Thank you to everyone testing Effect v4 beta, reporting issues, trying migrations, and following along with the weekly updates.

In the meantime: install the beta, build something real, and share what works, what breaks, and what feels off. That feedback is what will shape the final Effect v4.

Effect v4 Beta updates

This week, Effect v4 Beta got a major push on documentation quality, new stream and CLI primitives, and several notable API refinements — here are the most notable changes that landed in effect-smol.

Documentation overhaul: Standardized JSDoc example imports across the entire codebase, normalized category tags, validated JSDoc links in the new standard-jsdoc lint rule, vetted @since tags between v3 and v4, and improved example titles and generated indexes. A new standard-jsdoc ESLint rule is now enabled across the library.
New Stream APIs: Added Stream.broadcastN for broadcasting to N downstream consumers, added Schedule.tap for side-effecting on schedule steps, and fixed Channel.decodeText to correctly handle UTF-8 chunk boundaries.

SQL & Sharding: Added support for .mts and .mjs SQL migration files, and added availableShardGroups to ShardingConfig to prevent advisory lock conflicts.

Effect v4 Beta updates

Significant Schema ergonomics improvements, a new durable module port, and continued IndexedDB refinements — here are the most notable changes that landed in effect-smol.

Schema defaults & decoding: Allowed schema decoding defaults to require services (enabling context-aware defaults), allowed defaults to fail with SchemaError, switched to eager mapping for schema defaults for more predictable behavior, fixed makeEffect usage, and restored support for passing schema parse options when creating decode/encode helpers. Also renamed SchemaParser.makeUnsafe to SchemaParser.make for consistency.
DurableQueue: Ported the DurableQueue module from v3, bringing persistent queue semantics to the v4 beta.
IndexedDB: Used Cause.NoSuchElementError for IDB .first queries (aligning with the rest of the Effect error model), and cached base IDB query builders for better performance.
HttpApi: Allowed overriding HttpApiTest group base URLs, making it easier to test endpoints against different environments.
RPC & HTTP: Fixed RpcServer HTTP finalizer request IDs, and removed the HTTP server log span counter.
SQL: Added Sql.unique for queries that must return exactly one row.
Developer experience: Fixed schema Struct symbol links to preserve “Go to Definition” (F12) navigation in VSCode, and clarified filter annotation messages in Schema docs.

The One Weird Git Trick That Makes Coding Agents More Effect-ive

One of the most common questions we get on the Effect team in the era of AI-assisted coding is how to get coding agents to write good, idiomatic Effect code.

Our answer is always the same: give your agent real library code to learn from. More specifically, give the agent access to the Effect source code.

Stop Making Agents Guess

If you follow us on social media, you’ve probably heard us recommend cloning the Effect repository directly into your project. The advice sounds strange until you remember what coding agents are actually good at: reading and exploring code (crazy, I know).

They’re substantially less effective when working from documentation written for humans. When source code is available, an agent can explore it the way it was designed to: by following usage patterns, tracing abstractions, and learning from existing patterns. More importantly, this approach isn’t specific to Effect - it works for any external software your application depends on.

The most practical method for making external software explorable by your coding agent is to simply vendor the project’s Git repository directly into your application’s codebase.

In this post we will explain why this works, why git subtrees are a good fit for it, and how to set it up without making your project harder to manage.

Why Having the Source Code Available Matters

A common approach when utilizing coding agents is to rely on web search / web fetch to allow the agent to retrieve information about external dependencies when required. In practice, however, the agent will only have access to isolated code snippets without the surrounding structure, often requiring it to repeatedly fetch code it has already seen or until it has enough information to proceed. This is token inefficient and leads to highly fragmented context.

Documentation has a different limitation - it usually explains what an API or library does but not how it is actually used across a codebase. Coding agents rely on patterns and examples, not descriptions.

Having source code available locally allows us to remedy both issues at once. When the agent is unsure about how to use a particular API or library, it can explore the actual implementation of that codebase just like any other part of your project.

This is also why relying on code in node_modules usually isn’t enough. The code is often compiled or flattened, which removes the structure that makes it useful to read. Even if a particular library does publish their uncompiled source, most coding agents are deoptimized from exploring node_modules or other gitignore directories in the first place.

Why Git Subtrees Instead of Git Submodules?

It might seem intuitive to simply use git submodule to vendor external software into a project. Submodules are (unfortunately) a familiar feature of git for most developers, keep the repositories cleanly separated, and allow pinning external codebases to a specific commit.

And to be honest, submodules are fine - they accomplish the end goal which is allowing the agent direct access to external source code. But in our opinion there are features of git submodule that make them quite annoying for this specific purpose.

They require explicit initialization when cloning a project, which (if you are like me) can be really easy to forget to do
They also introduce a layer of indirection (your repo now “points” to another repo instead of just containing the source code)
They require additional metadata to be tracked in git (i.e. the .gitmodules file)

Instead, git subtree allows you to directly nest one repository inside another as a subdirectory. Once a subtree is created, it behaves like any other directory in your project. That means both the engineers and coding agents working on a project can ignore the fact that a subtree is even in use.

Adding a Git Subtree

You can add an external dependency to your project under a dedicated directory (such as repos/effect) with a single command:

The --prefix flag controls where the repository will live inside your project. We recommend keeping all vendored projects under a single directory (i.e. repos/). This makes it much easier to, for example, add a one-liner to your AGENTS.md to explore repos/effect when writing Effect code.

It’s also worth calling out the --squash flag - without it, you will clone the entire history of the external repository into your own project’s git history. For larger projects this can mean thousands of commits. Including --squash in the command ensures that everything is collapsed into a single commit.

Updating a Git Subtree

When you want to pull in changes from an external project, you can simply run:

Each update shows up as a single commit, which keeps things predictable and easy to review.

Configuring Your Editor

Ok, now you’ve got a few external repositories sitting in your repos/ directory and you’re ready to let your agents --dangerously-skip-permissions.

The problem is that you (the human-in-the-loop) probably still want to be able to use your code editor from time to time. On those rare occasions where you are hands-on in a code editor instead of a prompt box, you probably do not want your editor suggesting search results and/or auto-imports from these external repositories.

In VSCode, you can exclude your repos/ directory from search, file watching, and auto-import suggestions with a few small tweaks to your project’s .vscode/settings.json:

Other editors can be configured similarly, but your mileage may vary.

Configuring the Agent

Now that you’ve got one or more subtrees vendored into your project, you will need to make the agent aware that they are there, and how to use them. This is usually done through the AGENTS.md file (or whichever file your coding agent uses).

The important thing is to be explicit about both the location and the intended usage. You do not want the agent treating vendored repositories as part of your application codebase. You want it to read them as reference material. For example:

You can also make this more specific for the libraries you vendor, for example:

When writing Effect code, inspect @repos/effect/ for examples of idiomatic usage, tests, module structure, and API design. Treat it as the source of truth for Effect patterns.

If you’ve created a subtree for Effect v4, you can also explicitly tell the agent to always read @repos/effect/LLMS.md before writing any Effect code.

Creating Pattern Files

Another useful pattern is to ask the agent to create a small reference file for a particular data type or module from the vendored codebase. This gives the agent a project-local artifact it can come back to later instead of rediscovering the same patterns repeatedly.

For example, you might ask:

The resulting file does not need to be exhaustive. It should be a practical reference that captures the idioms the agent is most likely to need when working in your application code.

The Trade-Off

Vendoring repositories does increase the size of your project, and you take on a bit of responsibility for keeping them up to date. It’s not free.

But the payoff in terms of improved output quality from your coding agents when using external dependencies is, in our opinion, well worth it. Especially in an era where humans are doing less and less of the actual hands-on coding ourselves.

Effect v4 Beta updates

A steady week for the v4 beta, with new testing utilities, schema additions, and a handful of targeted bug fixes across HTTP, observability, and RPC — here are the most notable changes that landed in effect-smol.

New APIs: Added HttpApiTest module for testing HttpApi handlers without a running server, added Effect.acquireDisposable for integrating with the TC39 Explicit Resource Management proposal (using keyword), and ported Effect.firstSuccessOf from v3.
Schema additions: Added Schema.DurationFromString for parsing duration strings, and added Config.literals as a convenience constructor for Schema.Literals.
RPC: Added Rpc.custom for defining custom RPC handlers with full control over the request/response lifecycle.
HTTP: Fixed empty body decoding in HttpApiBuilder, and fixed OpenAI config fields being incorrectly spread into the request body.
Observability & runtime: Fixed OpenTelemetry logger severity mapping, moved the fiber lifetime metric start hook to the correct lifecycle point, and fixed formatJson circular reference handling while removing a duplicated stringifyCircular utility.
Schema error messages: Normalized SchemaTransformation decoding error messages for more consistent output.
Platform: Allowed null for Kubernetes condition lastTransitionTime to handle optional fields in K8s manifests.

Reactivity: Added an .exhaustive() finalizer to the AsyncResult builder, ensuring all async result states are handled before the builder is sealed.
OpenAI & AI: Added OpenAI reasoning support, expanding the AI integration capabilities introduced in recent weeks.
RPC & Entity: Fixed the entity proxy RPC handler context, resolving an issue where the wrong context could be injected when using entity proxies.
IndexedDB: Cleaned up IndexedDb prototypes, continuing the refinement of the IDB module.
Platform & internals: Allowed Duration.Input with accessors for more ergonomic duration handling, and optimized binary array generation from streams to reduce unnecessary copying.

Effect v4 Beta updates

The v4 beta had another packed week, with new packages, workflow reliability fixes, and a steady stream of Schema and HTTP improvements. Here are the most notable changes that landed in effect-smol.

New packages & APIs: Added @effect/sql-pglite for PGlite-backed SQL, added Effect.abortSignal for exposing the current fiber’s abort signal, added Socket.make for low-level socket construction, and added the Effectable module for defining custom effect-like types.
Workflow & Durable execution: Fixed workflow failures being squashed by suspension interrupts, isolated workflow suspension in DurableDeferred.into, and fixed Latch.release.
Schema improvements: Expanded FilterOutput to support multiple failures and full Issues at paths, added concurrent processing of schema properties and elements, improved the TemplateLiteralParser example, and ensured tagged enum _tag is correctly set.
OpenAI & AI: Fixed the OpenAI MCP tool integration, restored OpenAI reasoning types, and updated the OpenAI schema strategy.
HttpApi & HTTP: Made HttpApi schema errors defects unless explicitly transformed, included middleware errors in AtomHttpApi queries and mutations, fixed http schemaBodyJson parseOptions annotation, and returned a 404 for MCP HTTP requests with no session header.
IndexedDB: Fixed the IDB entries transaction.
SQL & internals: Disabled SQL traces for EventLog and RunnerStorage, added makeMsgPack for configurable msgpackr options, removed use of bigint literals, fixed the isNullish() type predicate, and fixed TestClock nanoseconds flooring before BigInt conversion.

no worries at all, the best way is to start a project, add the effect repo as a git subtree and use claude/opencode/codex to ask questions and extract best patterns, models are great as a learning tool

Effect v4 Beta updates

Here are the main changes that landed in effect-smol:

Schema refinements: Renamed ~rebuild.out to Rebuild for cleaner ergonomics, added Schema.annotateEncoded for annotating the encoded side of a schema, added withDecodingDefaultTypeKey / withDecodingDefaultType, and allowed Class constructors to accept void when all fields are optional.
RPC improvements: Added support for deferred responses in RPC, added RpcGroup.omit, and added a require option to AtomRpc.query to make atoms serializable.
IndexedDB persistence: Merged the IDB persistence layer, building on the IndexedDB module introduced last week.
HttpApi & HTTP: Added support for common string literals in HttpApiSchema.status, and omitted scope from HttpApi handlers to simplify usage.
EventLog: EventLog identity now string-encodes to base64.
CLI: Fixed an issue with exported CLI completion types.
Internals: Fixed SIGINT listener not being removed until fiber exit, updated dependencies, and cleaned up AGENTS.md.

Effect v4 Beta updates

Here are the main changes that landed in effect-smol:

Breaking: ServiceMap renamed to Context: The ServiceMap module has been renamed back to Context, realigning with Effect v3 naming conventions. This is one of the most impactful changes of the week for anyone already building on the v4 beta.
IndexedDB expansion: Added streaming and offset support to IDB queries, compound index improvements, encoded types for IDB queries, a .reverse() method to IDB selects, a rebuild API for IDB databases, an improved transaction API, and support for customizing IDB durability. Model.Class can now also be used directly for IndexedDB schemas.
Schema additions & fixes: Added StringFromBase64, StringFromBase64Url, StringFromHex, and StringFromUriComponent schemas for decoding encoded strings into UTF-8, improved Schema.encodeKeys typing, fixed several missing ~rebuild.out types, fixed duplicate identifier reference reuse, added a compile-time MissingSelfGeneric error for Class APIs, and fixed @category JSDoc tags.
RPC & Entity: Added rpc ConnectionHooks, fixed Entity.keepAlive, and improved defect handling when building Entity handlers.

CLI & HTTP: Fixed unstable CLI boolean flags, underlined active labels in CLI multi-select prompts, added support for form-urlencoded in the OpenAPI generator’s HTTP client format, and added a docs section on customizing schema error responses in HttpApi.
PostgreSQL & internals: Guarded transaction acquire failures in PgClient.fromPool, returned resolvers directly from SqlModel.makeResolvers, added KeyValueStore.layerSql, and made Unify.unify work with the Layer module.

Effect v4 Beta updates

Here are the main changes that landed in effect-smol.

Schema overhaul: Renamed makeUnsafe back to make, merged ExtendableClass into Class, added Schema.asClass to turn any schema into a class with static method support, added Schema.resolveAnnotationsKey, added a compile-time MissingSelfGeneric error for Class APIs, simplified default-value APIs to accept Effect<T>, added makeEffect alongside makeUnsafe on Schema.Bottom, removed the ~annotate.in type from Bottom, fixed duplicate identifier reuse in references, fixed ErrorClass/TaggedErrorClass toString to match native Error output, and added several missing *FromString schemas.
IndexedDB & reactive stores: Merged the long-awaited IndexedDb module (originally opened in February), added .reactive to IndexedDB .first queries, added defaults to reactivity keys, allowed Model.Class for IndexedDB schemas, and allowed customizing IDB durability.
Stream & runtime: Added Stream service accessors, fixed Stream.groupedWithin partial batch flushing, added Stream.timeoutOrElse, fixed Effect.repeat to use the effect return value when using options, and added Layer.suspend constructor.
SQL & HTTP: Added KeyValueStore.layerSql, returned resolvers directly from SqlModel.makeResolvers, made Unify.unify work with the Layer module, and updated the HttpMiddleware logger to only log the path.
Platform & internals: Added child process unref support, cleaned up ShardId, removed rulesync and cleanup patterns, and renamed dtslint directories to typetest.

Here are the main changes that landed in effect-smol.

HttpApi overhaul: Added a code generation module (HttpApi.gen), reworked HttpApiClient so urlBuilder uses schemas and client-shaped APIs, renamed the withResponse option to responseMode, added disableCodecs option to HttpClientEndpoint constructors, fixed security middleware cache reuse, and updated docs to reflect automatic codec coercion for HttpApiEndpoint. Also allowed middleware to accept error arrays and fixed the HttpApi.Any constraint for HttpApiClient.urlBuilder.
Schema improvements: Collapsed same-type literal branches into a single enum array in JSON Schema output, fixed compactEnums to support multi-value enum branches, renamed MakeOptions.disableValidation to disableChecks (now also applies constructor defaults when set), and fixed Struct utility return types (e.g. pick) to preserve the simplified shape instead of exposing raw Pick<T, K> types.
AI & streaming: Fixed missing finish parts in LanguageModel streaming, fixed tool output persistence in streamed chat history, fixed the OpenRouter client HTTP referer header name, and added Stream.timeoutOrElse.
PostgreSQL & runtime: Added a dedicated PG connection for LISTEN, switched to pg_notify instead of raw NOTIFY in PgClient, cleaned up sql-pg constructors and layers, fixed Unify.unify for Effect unions, flushed devtools queued messages on teardown, and tracked ManagedRuntime fibers in a scope.
Bug fixes & internals: Fixed Schedule.fixed immediate catch-up for long-running iterations, re-exported core ServiceMap references in effect/References, fixed Queue.takeN example, fixed metro bundler issues, allowed ServiceMap.Key to be covariant, and improved Prompt.select/multiSelect highlight text color.

Supermemory was built in a completely composable way with Effect!

One of the best things we did early on @supermemory is that we built it in a completely composable way. every layer / provider of supermemory can be swapped out. Which means for a local version, we can just use local stuff and it will work perfectly!

Effect 3.20 Security Update

Today we published a security advisory for Effect versions prior to 3.20.0: GHSA-38f7-945m-qr2g.

If your application uses Effect together with libraries that depend on Node.js AsyncLocalStorage, you should upgrade to effect@3.20.0 immediately.

A short history

This issue was reported to us by jamesone, who encountered the behavior in a real application while using Effect RPC together with Clerk.

Their report was instrumental in helping us understand the interaction between AsyncLocalStorage and the fiber scheduler, reproduce the issue reliably, and ship the fix in 3.20.0.

We are very grateful for the careful report, the debugging work behind it, and the time they spent helping us get to the bottom of the problem.

Who is affected?

Applications are affected when they combine:

effect < 3.20.0
concurrent request handling
libraries that rely on AsyncLocalStorage

This includes integrations such as Clerk, Next.js request APIs like cookies() and headers(), and other tooling that stores per-request data in AsyncLocalStorage.

What is the issue?

Under concurrent load, older Effect versions could resume fiber work under the wrong AsyncLocalStorage context.

That means request-local state could be lost or, in the worst case, read from another in-flight request. In practice, this can lead to issues like:

auth() returning the wrong user session
request headers or cookies resolving from the wrong request
telemetry and tracing context crossing request boundaries

In systems that use AsyncLocalStorage for authentication or authorization, this becomes a security issue.

It is also important to clarify that this is not directly exploitable in a deterministic way. The vulnerability does not give user X a reliable method to impersonate or target user Y on demand.

Instead, it manifests through timing and concurrency: under load, request context can be mixed in a way that appears random from the application’s point of view. That makes it dangerous precisely because it is intermittent, difficult to predict, and difficult to detect with confidence.

Why this can reproduce

This issue appears when two separate mechanisms are combined:

Node.js AsyncLocalStorage, which tracks context through async boundaries such as Promise.then(...) and setTimeout(...)
the Effect fiber scheduler, which cooperatively yields and later resumes fiber execution

By themselves, both features are valid. The problem is that they do not automatically understand each other.

Older Effect versions could place work from multiple fibers into the same scheduler drain when yielding cooperatively. When that happened, several fiber resumptions could run inside a single Promise.then(...) or setTimeout(...) callback.

That matters because AsyncLocalStorage associates its context with that async callback chain. If fibers from different requests are resumed from the same scheduler callback, the callback only has one AsyncLocalStorage context, not one per fiber.

As a result, request-local APIs built on AsyncLocalStorage can observe the wrong request state. This is why the issue tends to show up under concurrent traffic and why it can be difficult to notice in simpler local testing.

This is also why we do not think of it as a classical single-component bug. It is a vulnerability caused by the interaction between two independent features: Node’s async context propagation and Effect’s cooperative fiber scheduling.

Why this matters for Clerk and similar libraries

Libraries such as Clerk expose APIs that look request-local, but internally rely on AsyncLocalStorage to determine which request is currently active.

If an Effect fiber resumes with the wrong AsyncLocalStorage context, those APIs can observe the wrong request state. That is why code may appear correct in development, but fail under real concurrent production traffic.

The fix

The issue is fixed in effect@3.20.0.

To patch this, we changed the scheduler so that yielding work is no longer mixed across different fibers when it resumes via async callbacks like Promise.then(...) or setTimeout(...).

Instead of draining resumptions for multiple fibers inside the same scheduler callback, the scheduler now resumes them on a per-fiber basis. That preserves the correct async context boundary and prevents AsyncLocalStorage-backed libraries from seeing another fiber’s request state.

The fix was implemented in PR #6124.

If you use Clerk, Next.js App Router helpers, or any other AsyncLocalStorage-backed library together with Effect, upgrade now:

As a short-term mitigation, read AsyncLocalStorage-backed values before entering the Effect runtime, then pass those values into your Effect program explicitly through headers, request context, or services.

This reduces exposure, but it is only a workaround. The recommended fix is to upgrade to 3.20.0.

If your production system uses Effect with Clerk or similar libraries, treat this as a priority update.

Here are the main changes that landed in effect-smol.

AI & agentic features: Added Anthropic provider support for dynamic tools, introduced an Embeddings module with a new ModelDimensions service, fixed missing finish parts in LanguageModel streaming, fixed missing tool output persistence in streamed chat history, fixed incremental prompt fallback, added retry logic on invalid requests, and removed a duplicate ToolApprovalResponsePartOptions type.
Schema & data types: Added Schema.ArrayEnsure, Schema.Result decode/encode helpers, Schema.declare and Schema.declareConstructor docs, isMutableHashMap and isMutableHashSet predicates, a Config.Success type utility, ported Url from v3, and added Equivalence.Date. Fixed DateTime.makeUnsafe incorrectly appending "Z" to date strings containing "GMT".
HTTP & platform: Added HttpApiMiddleware.layerSchemaErrorTransform, allowed HttpApi middleware to accept error arrays, bumped undici minimum to ^7.24.0 for CVE fixes, improved OpenAI socket error handling and interrupt cancellation, and fixed ResponseIdTracker to use Map and clear on reset.
Bug fixes & internals: Fixed Stream.scanEffect hanging behavior, made Layer.mock work with Stream and Channel, fixed Tool.make type and runtime behavior when parameters are not provided, aligned CLI help description columns for long flags, added Effect.acquireRelease release dependency support, and fixed JSDoc wording for Effect.catch.

HTTP improvements: Added a static file server, expireCookie APIs for HTTP cookies, Headers.removeMany combinator, and improved HttpClient.withRateLimiter with automatic delay from retry-after headers. Also fixed HttpApiBuilder void responses incorrectly producing a non-empty body instead of Response.empty.
AI & OpenAI-compat: Added support for custom model/request properties in openai-compat, forwarded reasoning config, and added Model.BooleanSqlite schema for AI model integrations.
Schema & CLI: Added Atom.swr combinator, improved Schema.Unknown / Schema.ObjectKeyword handling in toCodecJson, fixed JSON Schema emission for unannotated Never index signatures, and made parent flag inheritance explicit in CLI via Command.withSharedFlags.
Bug fixes & internals: Fixed Effect.forkScoped Scope requirements, corrected SqlSchema findAll/findNonEmpty request input typing, exposed fallback parameter in Effect.catchTags, and added Scheduler.PreventSchedulerYield reference.

The v4 beta has been evolving rapidly since launch — here are the most notable changes that landed this week in effect-smol.

New Tx modules & transaction model refactored, improving consistency and ergonomics across transactional workflows.
Schema improvements: added Schema.makeOption / SchemaParser.makeOption for constructing schema values as Option, introduced OptionFromUndefinedOr and OptionFromNullishOr, and fixed Schema.encodeKeys to correctly encode non-remapped struct fields.
OpenAPI & HTTP fixes: multipart file upload schema fixed in OpenAI and OpenAI JSON schemas correctly transformed for AI integrations.
CLI bug fix: resolved global flag handling in mixed CLI contexts.

Effect v4 Beta is officially live! Here are the key highlights:

Rewritten runtime with lower memory overhead, faster execution, and simpler internals. The bundle size of a minimal program combining Effect, Stream, and Schema went from ~70 kB in v3 to ~20 kB in v4.
Unified versioning across all ecosystem packages, eliminating version mismatch.
Consolidated architecture where many previously separate packages have been merged into core.

Effect v4 is the culmination of years of feedback from the Effect community — from production users who hit real pain points, newcomers who found the ecosystem hard to navigate, and from folks who were interested in Effect but never took the plunge. This release is for all of you.

The core fiber runtime has been rewritten from scratch to have lower memory overhead, faster execution, and simpler internals. Every Effect application will benefit from these optimizations immediately.

Beyond the runtime, a substantial number of core modules have been rebuilt with performance as a primary design goal. The cumulative result: v4 is faster and lighter than v3 in every dimension.

Bundle size

One of the most common concerns about Effect — especially for frontend applications — has been bundle size.

Effect has always been tree-shakable, and in v4, many core modules have been rewritten from the ground up to be smaller and more efficient. A minimal program using Effect, Stream, and Schema drops from roughly 70 kB in v3 to about 20 kB in v4 — and individual use cases scale accordingly.

Whether you’re pulling in just the core, adding streams, or using schema, the size of your Effect v4 applications will be significantly smaller than with Effect v3.

One version. One ecosystem.

In v3, each package was versioned independently:

effect@3.x
@effect/platform@0.x
@effect/sql@0.x
and so on

If you’ve ever debugged a version mismatch between Effect packages, you know the pain. In v4, that’s over. All Effect ecosystem packages share a single version number and are released together. When you see effect@4.0.0-beta.0, you know that @effect/sql-pg@4.0.0-beta.0 is the matching version. No guessing, no cross-referencing changelogs.

Some packages will receive a new version even when they contain no changes, but we believe this is a worthwhile tradeoff for simpler dependency management.

A consolidated core

Many previously separate packages have been consolidated into the core effect package.

Functionality that was spread across @effect/platform, @effect/rpc, @effect/cluster, and others now lives directly inside effect.

The packages that remain separate are platform-specific, provider-specific, or technology-specific implementations:

@effect/platform-* — platform packages
@effect/sql-* — SQL driver packages
@effect/ai-* — AI provider packages
@effect/opentelemetry — OpenTelemetry integration
@effect/atom-* — framework-specific atom bindings
@effect/vitest — testing utilities for Vitest

The principle is simple: core abstractions live in effect. Separate packages provide the concrete implementations that connect those abstractions to specific runtimes, databases, APIs, and frameworks.

Unstable modules

Effect v4 introduces unstable modules — accessible via effect/unstable/* import paths.

In v3, delivering new functionality meant creating new packages, which you then had to discover, install, and keep in sync.

In v4, new capabilities ship inside the core effect package — but without committing to semver stability for APIs that are still evolving.

The contract is simple:

Modules under effect/unstable/* may receive breaking changes in minor releases
Modules outside unstable/ follow strict semver — no breaking changes until the next major version
As unstable modules mature, they graduate into the top-level effect/* namespace

v4 ships with 17 unstable modules covering AI, HTTP, Schema, SQL, RPC, CLI, workflows, clustering, and more.

The beta phase

The v4 codebase lives in the Effect-TS/effect-smol repository. Issues, pull requests, and discussions related to v4 should be directed there.

This is a beta. We’ll iterate quickly, and beta releases may include breaking changes. APIs will evolve as we incorporate real-world feedback and refine the design, and just like before, we will document changes in each release in the package changelog.

If you’re running Effect in production, v3 remains our recommended choice for now.

Once v4 does stabilize, it will be a long-term stable (LTS) release. We want major versions to be infrequent going forward, and we’ll take the time we need to get there.

Effect v3 going forward

Effect v3 will continue to receive active maintenance after v4 reaches stability. We’ll publish a maintenance schedule as v4 approaches its stable release.

One thing to note, however, is that we are introducing a feature freeze for v3: bug fixes and security patches will continue, but new features will be developed exclusively for v4.

Migrating from Effect v3

If you’re coming from Effect v3, the core programming model — Effect, Layer, Schema, Stream, and the rest — is the same. The changes are in how packages are organized, how modules are versioned, and in the details of specific APIs.

We’re also building migration tooling: codemods for renamings, AI-assisted migration skills, and more. We prioritized getting the release into your hands over delaying the beta to build out migration tooling. These tools will follow.

Try it now

Port a project, a module, or even just a file, and tell us how it goes. When you hit a bug, a confusing API, a missing feature, or something that just doesn’t feel right, file an issue on effect-smol. Reproduction steps, code snippets, and descriptions of what you expected vs. what happened all help us move faster.

Not ready to migrate? Testing the beta against your existing codebase and reporting what breaks is just as valuable. Even “I tried to upgrade and here’s what didn’t work” gives us the signal we need.
